Hedong in ancient times refers to the southwest of Shanxi, located in the Qin-Jin Grand Canyon in the Yellow River section of the Qiankunwan, Hukou Falls and Yumengkou (ancient Longmen) to the storks east of the area, is the cradle of Chinese civilization. The Yellow River flows from north to south through the southwestern border of Shanxi Province, because in the east of the Yellow River, so this area is anciently known as Hedong.

The capital of Jin was also in this area during the Zhou Dynasty. During the Qin and Han Dynasties, it was referred to as Hedong County, which is located in the area of Yuncheng and Linfen in present-day Shanxi Province. After the Tang Dynasty, it referred to Shanxi in general.
