What is the difference between Yuanxiao and Tangyuan?
Appearance is different: the skin of Yuanxiao is dry and soft. Tangyuan skin is smooth and sticky. The prepared glutinous rice balls are smooth and shiny, very sticky and difficult to preserve. It is best to make them and eat them now.
The raw materials are different: Yuanxiao and Tangyuan, although they are both made of glutinous rice flour, are made of dry glutinous rice flour, while Tangyuan is made of glutinous rice balls, with more water content than Yuanxiao.
Different fillings: most of the fillings in northern Yuanxiao are bean paste, black sesame seeds and peanuts, and the fillings are hard, generally sweet. In the south, dumplings have a wide range of fillings, which are soft, and there are many choices of salty, sweet and meat.
