Why is pineapple called pineapple?
Pineapple was first grown in the Amazon basin of Brazil and Paraguay in South America, and then brought back to the West Indies in Central and South America by residents of the Caribbean. At that time, people called it "excellent fruit". In 1493, the famous navigator Columbus sailed through the Caribbean and brought it to Europe, which was called "pineapple". Later, it was introduced to Asia from Europe, and soon it entered Guangdong, China, where people called it Bomi. Some scholars in China saw a cluster of leaves growing on the top of the pineapple, like the tail of the legendary bird Phoenix, so they called it "Fenglai". However, in China's Minnan dialect, the pronunciation of "Lai" and "Pear" is the same, so the name of "pineapple" finally becomes "pineapple".
