The prototype of Chinese horseshoe crab is spoon-shaped and dark brown, with a total length of 70 cm and a width of about 30 cm. Generally, female adults weigh more than 2kg. The carapace of the head, chest and back is wide and slightly horseshoe-shaped, and it is semicircular from its front edge to the left and right sides, and both sides protrude backward into a thorn shape. The back protrusion is higher (slightly flat in males) and there is a longitudinal ridge in the center. There are 1 pairs of monocles at the front end and 1 pairs of longitudinal ridges at both sides. There are 1 pairs of compound eyes, sunken ventral surface, mouth and 6 pairs of appendages. The first two pairs are appendages of the head, 1 is short in contrast and consists of three sections. The second pair grows up and consists of six segments, which are called feet and whiskers. The two segments at the ends of larvae and females are chelates, and the ends of males are hooks and hoops. The other four pairs are called chest limbs, which are located on both sides of the mouth. Basal ganglia often have barbs to help eating, also known as jaw limbs. The first three pairs of the last two joints are also pliers, and the back 1 pair is suitable for digging holes and crawling in the sand. The abdomen is slightly hexagonal, and there are six pairs of movable barbs on both sides of the male. The first three pairs are larger, but the fourth, fifth and sixth pairs of marginal barbs of the female have degenerated into very short ones. There are 6 pairs of slatted appendages on the ventral surface, 1 connected to the left and right, covering the genital foramen, so it is called reproductive organs. On the inner side of the other pair of outer limbs, there are 150-200 pages of thin gills, in which there is a vascular network for gas exchange, and 1 on the head and chest for excreting the four-leaf basal ganglia. There is a triangular tapered tail sword at the ventral end, and serrated spines at the base of the upper and lower corners. The length of the tail sword is roughly the same as that of the carapace.
Habitat distribution
Ecological environment: They usually live on the muddy seabed with a water depth of less than 40m, feed on worms, annelids, brachiopods and mollusks, and come out for activities during the day and night. May-August is the breeding season, and males and females climb to the intertidal zone in pairs. Usually the male is on the female's back, and June-July is the peak of spawning. Female horseshoe crabs dig holes in the beach before laying eggs and lay eggs in each hole. The larva horseshoe crab, with a body length of only 7-8mm and no tail, is divided into three parts: the center and the sides, which are very similar to the adults of trilobites, so it is called trilobite larva. It takes more than 20 molts and about 8 years to reach sexual maturity.
Distribution of resources: The northern boundary of the distribution is the sea area outside Zhoushan, Zhejiang (southeast of Daishan). Artificial feeding has been carried out.
