p>In 1929 at the beginning of the city, Chongqing "city" area of 2.4 square kilometers, after more than 80 years of development, Chongqing built-up area expanded by more than 200 times. By the end of 2009, the built-up area of the main city of Chongqing reached 481 square kilometers.
Since the 1997 administration, due to the special structure of the Chongqing Municipality, the formation of a similar municipality directly under the Central Government on the concept of economic, cultural and transportation within the urban area, is the main city of Chongqing.
This concept is often associated with the "old Chongqing area" (i.e., Chongqing Municipality, Sichuan Province, commonly known as the nine districts and twelve counties, adjusted administrative boundaries of the present-day Chongqing main city of nine districts, Changshou District, Qijiang District, Yongchuan District, Bishan District, Dazu District, Jiangjin District, Hechuan District, Tongliang District, Rongchang District, Tongnan District, with an area of 23,113.95 square kilometers) and the "Chongqing Municipality". (23,113.95 square kilometers) and "Chongqing Municipality" (38 districts and counties in Chongqing, with an area of 82,402.95 square kilometers).
Since Chongqing first became a municipality in 1939, the main city of Chongqing was the original administrative district of Chongqing, which was maintained until after the liberation.
Between 1950 and 1980, Chongqing was downgraded from a municipality directly under the central government to a separately listed city and then to a prefecture-level city, and its administrative area was expanded to the sum of the nine districts of the main city of Chongqing, plus Changshou, Qijiang, and Shuangqiao districts (Note: Shuangqiao district was incorporated into Dazu district in 2011).
After the 1980s, Chongqing resumed its status as a separately listed city, and the Jiangjin Administrative Commissioner's Office of Sichuan Province and the eight counties of the Yongchuan region (Jiangjin, Bishan, Yongchuan, Hechuan, Tongnan, Tongliang, Rongchang, and Dazu counties) were successively incorporated into Chongqing, which became a part of the city of Chongqing, Sichuan Province.
These districts and counties in Chongqing are similar in status to Qingpu, Chongming, and Jiading in Shanghai; Baodi and Jinghai in Tianjin; or Miyun and Yanqing in Beijing, and for the provincial capitals, these suburbs of Chongqing are similar to Huangpi in Wuhan, Lin'an and Jiande in Hangzhou, and Conghua and Zengcheng in Guangzhou.
