The fish, also known as the war boat and the filament perch, is native to Vietnam, Thailand and Malaysia, and belongs to the family Osphronemidae (filamentous perch) in the suborder Perciformes (Perciformes), the climbing perch (Anabantoidei). Fish in this family are generally small in size, but the Cai Cai is the giant of the family. The adult fish is 20 to 69 centimeters long and oval in shape. The body color is grayish-brown, with the ventral fins mutating into two long filiform fins, and each fin is light red.
