This product is a trigonal mineral Hematite, which mainly contains ferric oxide.

1.Clean ochre is quenched with vinegar, and crushed. When the pure medicinal material is silver until it is red, it is immediately put into vinegar for quenching (if it is not crisp, it can be repeatedly forged and quenched), taken out, dried, crushed or ground into powder. Every ochre 100kg, 30kg of vinegar (Pharmacopoeia 85).
2. Forge instead of ochre, put it on the fire to forge red, let it cool, and just remove the dust. Or take ochre and put it in an iron pot, cover it tightly, forge it with charcoal fire, take it out, let it cool, and grind it fine (Integration).
Modern research
1.The changes of arsenic content in ochre before and after processing were compared. The results show that the content of arsenic in forging ochre is reduced, and the texture is crisp after forging, which is easy to dissolve out the effective components. It is considered that the arsenic content in wrought ochre should be regarded as a quality index (Li Dajing et al.: Research on Chinese Patent Medicine, (3):17, 1985).
2. The ochre mainly contains ferric oxide, and the experiment shows that ferrous salt can't be detected in the decoction of ochre. The ochre was decocted in different acid solutions at different decocting times, and the ferrous salt content in each decoction was determined. It is considered that when ochre is used as a blood medicine, it should be decocted in acidic aqueous solution with pH3 for 3 hours (Sun Jijun et al.: Study on Chinese Patent Medicine, (11):16, 1985).
