The porcupine is a protected animal.

The porcupine is listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (IUCN) 2016 ver3.1 - Not Critical (LC).

The porcupine is listed in the List of Beneficial or Economically and Scientifically Important Terrestrial Wildlife under State Protection issued on August 1, 2000 by the State Forestry Administration of China.

The porcupine is facing extinction due to the increasing depletion of the wild porcupine, China's forestry department has listed the porcupine as a protected species and prohibited hunting.

Habitat

The porcupine lives in heavily wooded mountain hills, and is more numerous in grassy hillsides or dense forests near farmland. Inhabits mountain slopes, grassy areas or dense forests. Burrowing. Often live in natural stone caves or make their own. Although they dig and build their own, they mainly live by expanding and repairing the old nests of pangolins and termites. The construction of their nests is complex, usually consisting of a main nest, a secondary nest, a blind hole and several cave passages.

Blind holes have smaller tunnels and are places of refuge in case of danger. There are usually two, sometimes as many as four, openings to the outside, and there must be one opening in the weeds, which is the hole for escape in case of danger. This complex structure of the cave, is the best way to effectively defend against the enemy.
