Red wine should be drunk according to the five steps of observation, shaking, smelling, tasting and aftertaste.
Layered red wines are mostly new wines, and red wines with even color indicate that it has a certain age. If the red wine is slightly brown in color, it means that it is probably an aged bottle. Shaking the glass slowly will release the vinegar, ether, and acetaldehyde from the wine, while allowing oxygen to enter the wine. When smelling the wine, look for the most pronounced odor or the typical scent of red wine from different parts of the glass.
Tasting wine focuses on the word taste. Once the wine is in your mouth, let it stay there for a few more moments so that it fills the entire mouth. Swallow the wine in your mouth and feel the aftertaste and the length and balance of the aftertaste.
The correct way to hold a wine glass
1. Hold the foot of the glass and place it between your thumb and one or two fingers to lightly grip it. This method makes it simple to tilt the glass and observe the color of the wine as well as swirl the liquid in the glass.
2. Hold the bottom of the glass. Many people find that holding the glass in this way makes it easier and more comfortable to maneuver.
3. Unless you want to warm the wine in the glass, hold the glass in the palm of your hand and use the foot or bottom of the glass to avoid warming it.
4. If you are a right-handed person, rotate the glass in a counterclockwise direction and you will find it easy to do so, while if you are left-handed, try rotating the glass in a clockwise direction.
