The egret belongs to the order Craneiformes, and most of the egrets have bright plumage, and during the breeding season, they grow very long and beautiful feathers. Their habits are similar to those of other herons.
Egrets like to inhabit lakes, marshes and moist forests, and are known as wading birds. They eat mainly small fish, mammals, reptiles, amphibians and crustaceans in shallow water. They build large, less elaborate nests in trees, bushes or on the ground.
Great egrets are relatively common; they are about 90 centimeters long and only have feathers on their backs.
The Cattle Egret, native to Africa and Asia, and occasionally seen in northern South America and the United States, is a small, white-bodied, yellow-footed heron that is about 50 centimeters long. They prefer to roost on the ground, love the company of grazing livestock and wildlife, and enjoy eating insects.
The feathers of the egret have high ornamental value, and ancient people liked to use them to decorate their clothes, while Westerners liked to use them to embellish women's hats. Due to the high economic value of their feathers and the fact that egrets like to live in groups, they were once captured in large numbers, resulting in a sharp decline in their numbers and almost falling into extinction. Thanks to changes in the way people dressed and groomed themselves, and strict conservation measures, the egret was saved from extinction.
The yellow-billed egret is found in Jilin, Liaoning, Shandong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Guangdong, Fujian and other places, and is a second-grade protected animal. There are also rock herons, white spoonbills and black-faced spoonbills belonging to the second grade of China's protected animals.
