Mackerel is a very common edible fish, which lives near the western Pacific and Atlantic coasts and likes to live in groups. In the context of China, we should pay attention to "herring", which is different from one of the four famous fish in China. The average body length of mackerel is 30 to 50 cm, and the longest life span can reach 1 1 year. It lives by eating plankton and eggs laid by sturgeon, cod and herring.

Living habits

The dense shoal of mackerel reached 32 kilometers (20 miles) upstream of the water. They mainly feed on shellfish larvae, worms, fish eggs and small fish, and they are also the food of whales, sharks, dolphins, tuna and seabirds. In spring, mackerel migrate to the coast to lay eggs. Female fish lay 200,000 to 400,000 eggs.

Every egg contains a small drop of oil, so that they can float on the water. It takes four to six days for fish eggs to hatch. Small fish grow very fast and can grow to an average length of 5 cm (2 inches) in two months. In autumn, mackerel swims back to the deep sea.
