Fall potatoes are planted in the fall.
Potatoes like cold weather and are a crop that likes low temperatures. The formation and growth of underground tuber tuber requires loose, breathable, cool and moist soil environment. The temperature requirement is that the optimum temperature for tuber growth is 16°C to 18°C. When the local temperature is higher than 25°C, tubers stop growing; the optimum temperature for stem and leaf growth is 15°C to 25°C, and growth stops when the temperature exceeds 39°C.
The plant is divided into two parts: aboveground and underground. The aboveground part includes aboveground stems, pinnate leaves, flower buds and fruits; the underground part includes underground stems, roots, stolons and tubers. Whether the above-ground parts bear fruit or not is related to the variety and external environmental conditions. The same variety planted in different years and at different planting times in the same year will affect whether it blooms and bears fruit. The product obtained from potato cultivation is the tubers produced underground. Tubers are formed by the enlargement of the tops of stolons. They have many characteristics of above-ground stems. It can be said that there is no essential difference between stolons, tubers and above-ground stems, and they can transform into each other under certain environmental conditions.
The soil for planting does not have to be fertile, but it must be dry. It is not suitable for planting in wet and heavy clay. It is not a big problem if the soil is alkaline or acidic. If you want high yield, it is best to use nutrient soil (liquid) as planting soil. The nutrient soil (liquid) is prepared according to the fertilizer requirements of vegetables. You can use leaf humus soil, humus soil, peat soil, sawdust, wood shavings, rice husks, etc. Mix it with peat, or you can mix fine river sand or sand, perlite, vermiculite, cinder, etc. with leaf mold soil, compost soil, peat soil, etc. to prepare potting nutrient soil. If conditions permit, group cultivation of seedlings and soilless cultivation can be used.
Sowing can be done when the ground temperature is lower than 25°C. When sowing in autumn, varieties with a shorter growth period are generally selected. Using 20-30 grams of whole potatoes as seed potatoes can improve the survival rate. Field management of potatoes in autumn mainly includes drought and flood control, seedling checking and replenishing, weeding and fertilizing, etc. In autumn, pests and diseases are more active. Therefore, it is necessary to choose disease-free seed potatoes, and be sure to disinfect the knives when cutting into pieces to avoid cross-infection.
