Papaya is not a tree, but a small evergreen arbor plant, with a height of 5- 10 m, oval leaves, pink flowers, dark yellow fruit and a certain aroma, and it matures in September-10.
Appearance characteristics of papaya
There are two kinds of papaya, medicinal wrinkled papaya and edible papaya. Papaya tree with wrinkled skin is mostly a dwarf shrub, and the mature plants are about 2m high. Fruits, branches and leaves can be used as medicinal and ornamental plants.
Common papaya tree is a small soft evergreen tree, the height of which varies from 3 3- 10/0m, and it is not used as an ornamental plant. They are mainly distributed in tropical and a few subtropical areas.
Characteristics: Papaya fruit is thickened by ovary wall, containing carotenoids, and the pulp color ranges from orange to orange-red. Dark seeds are piled up in the larger cavity of the stone, which is a more mature fruit without storing starch. The aroma of carotenoids and fruits will increase several times from the inside out, and the pulp will become soft.
Where does papaya grow?
Papaya tree likes to grow in sunny places, which is also conducive to flowering and fruiting. Strong drought tolerance, but not resistant to tide and afraid of waterlogging. Therefore, water accumulation must be avoided, especially in high temperature and dry climate. If the temperature is high and the light is sufficient, not only the fruit grows vigorously, but also the sugar content of the fruit is high.
Papaya has weak cold tolerance. If the fruit grows at low temperature, it will not only grow slowly, but also reduce the sugar content of the fruit and make the flesh lighter. The suitable planting temperature is 26-32℃, and the average monthly temperature needs to be higher than 16℃ to grow normally.
Papaya is widely planted in China, mainly distributed in Hubei, Jiangxi, Anhui, Shandong, Shaanxi, Henan, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Guangdong and Guangxi.
