Mile County is located in the southeast of Yunnan Province and the north of Honghe Prefecture. It is known as the "North Gate" of Honghe Prefecture. It has a total area of ??4,004 square kilometers. The county is 143 kilometers from the provincial capital Kunming in the north, 129 kilometers from the prefecture capital Gejiu in the south, and a national-level open port in the south.

During the Han Dynasty, the northeastern part of Mile County belonged to Tongbin County of Zangqi County, and the southwest part belonged to Lugao County of Yizhou County.
It was the Maitreya Department in Nanzhao and Ningdali. It was changed to Maitreya Prefecture in the 12th year of the Yuan Dynasty (1275). It was changed to Maitreya County in the 35th year of Qianlong's reign in the Qing Dynasty (1770) and was under the jurisdiction of Guangxi Zhili Prefecture.
During the Republic of China, it was still called Mile County. In 1954, it was placed under the Mengzi Prefecture. In 1955, it was changed to Mile Yi Autonomous County.
In 1957, it was changed to Mile County and placed under the jurisdiction of Honghe Prefecture.
Mile County is inhabited by Han, Yi, Dai, Miao, Hui, Zhuang and other ethnic groups, making it a multi-ethnic county.
