I am a game copywriter who has been working as a game writer for four years and has experienced two or three long game development periods. Before that, my major had nothing to do with gaming.
1. What does a game copywriter do?
I have heard many sayings, for example, a copywriter is a screenwriter and writes the plot. For another example, copywriting is about framing the worldview. Others say that copywriting is used as prop packaging.
It’s actually not that complicated. I have a very simple explanation here. All the text descriptions you see in the game are the responsibility of our game copywriters.
Like the text introduction of the loading screen, the description in the app store and what the developer has to say, the plot, the lines... all need copywriters to come up with words.
2. What are the requirements for entering the industry?
First, say the most important thing three times.
Don’t look at academic qualifications, don’t look at academic qualifications, don’t look at academic qualifications!
Of course, this "don't look" is a bit absolute. Some major companies recruiting on campus have raised the bar from the written examination stage. But from a broad perspective, game companies look more at your "work/creative experience" than your "high education."
Then the question is, what is the creative experience?
Known: Copywriting is text-related work.
Q: What do you look for when recruiting copywriters?
Obviously, the company needs to recruit people with relatively strong writing skills. Therefore, this is a track that is very friendly to liberal arts students, and its salary is relatively good compared to other industries.
However, the writing skills required for game copywriting do not refer to the ability to write reports, write public accounts (unless you are writing stories), write advertisements, film reviews, essays, and essays.
Broadly speaking, the project team needs a storyteller.
To be more realistic, the interviewer will basically ask: Oops, dear kid, have you ever written a novel? Or a similar original story?
Take myself as an example. I have more than one million words of writing experience, and I have signed a contract to write for a website. Some of the friends I know can write in private. They write fan fiction for love, create escape rooms and group running scripts with their peers, and serialize novels on websites... Only those who like to create and have some experience will consider doing this. One line.
Some of my classmates studied media editing and directing. Although they also write critical media reviews, they are still not in the same track.
At least during the interview, the interviewer will be happy to see you bring a portfolio with you. Usually when HR makes appointments, they also hope that candidates can send their works for consideration first. Therefore, the work is a hurdle that cannot be overcome. Try to organize your output so far in case of unexpected needs.
Friendly Tips: The portfolio can still include some poems and essays, which are your own characteristics, but the most important thing is a story with ups and downs and some specific character settings.
3. What will you do after joining the company?
More broadly speaking, you need to start building a worldview.
On a smaller scale, you have to stick to a line and revise it repeatedly to satisfy the boss~
In this process, there are countless main and branch plots, and packaging of game props. , gameplay, UI interface, etc. In addition, game copywriters also have a more important job, which is to provide art requirements. What you write must be able to be described so that the artist can understand it. Only when he understands can he draw what you want. This is demand.
Sometimes you have to cooperate with some dubbing plot work. This is the scene I took when I was in contact with the CV teachers in the recording studio.
Copywriting more or less has to deal with procedures. Although it is not too complicated, as a liberal arts student, a lot of brain cells have been lost. How can you present the plot you wrote on your mobile phone? We need to configure paragraphs of text into the table, and then put them into the simulator... It sounds complicated, right? It doesn't matter, just get used to it gradually.
I think that no matter what industry, applying for a job with the mentality that "anyone can do this kind of job" will definitely not yield satisfactory results. But don’t think of it as too complicated. Just calm down, confirm your preferences, and then do it to your heart's content~
4. Tell me what you think.
I think I am quite lucky, because when most people are doing jobs they don’t like, my job is still related to my interests, so I can still immerse myself in it and study hard.
If you like writing, you can be happy at least half of the time at work.
Being on a business trip like this for a week and having to take a plane at three or four in the middle of the night is all a joy.
There is a kind of me who sits within the system, boringly enduring endless reports and dealing with complex interpersonal relationships. I was the one who cried with my head in my arms after returning home like this.
There is also a kind of me who, facing Word, is immersed in conceiving a story, and even working overtime until 90 o'clock feels worthwhile. It’s me who is so tireless.
You ask what game copywriting is. In fact, it is a job that an ordinary person finds that he likes after combining his interests and hobbies through constant trial and error. That’s it.
