Eating pears during Jingzhe has two meanings: First, it comes from the homophonic word "li" for "pear". On the day of Jingzhe, people eat pears to stay away from pests and diseases.
Second, the Waking of Insects is coming. Mid-spring is approaching, the temperature difference changes greatly, and the weather is dry, so pears are eaten.
Eating pears at Jingzhe is mainly a folk custom in the north. In the north, Shanxi pears are the most famous, and there is a folk proverb that "Eating pears at Jingzhe will keep you energetic all year round."
Moreover, during the Waking of Insects every year, some places in Shanxi will hold traditional pear flower temple fairs. According to inscriptions, they originated during the Northern Wei Dynasty and have a history of more than 1,500 years.
Regarding the origin of eating pears in Jingzhe: The ancestor Qu Ji of the famous Shanxi merchant Qu family was a native of Shangdang County. In the early years of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty, he brought his two sons, Xin and Yi, to Qixian County with Luma and pears from Shangdang.
He bought coarse cloth and red dates and made a profit from traveling back and forth between the two places. Over time, he accumulated savings and settled down in Qixian County.
During the reign of Yongzheng, the Fourteenth Generation Qu Baichuan went to the west entrance. It was the day of the Waking of Insects. His father took out pears for him to eat and said that his ancestors sold pears and started a business. After going through many hardships, they settled in Qixian County.
Today, Jingzhe, you have to go to the west entrance. Eating pears will remind you not to forget your ancestors and work hard to start a business and honor your ancestors.
Qu Baichuan went to the west entrance to do business and became rich, and named the trade name "Chang Yuan Hou".
Later, those who walked to the west entrance also followed the example of eating pears, often with the idea of ??"leaving home to start a business". Later, people eating pears on Jingzhe Day also had the idea of ??"working hard to honor their ancestors".
