Physical Geography
Taishan is mountainous. There is Beifeng Mountain in the northeast, Nanfeng Mountain in the southeast, Dalong Mountain and Ziluo Mountain in the southwest, and Shangchuan Mountain and Xiachuan Mountain in the South China Sea. There are fewer mountains in the northwest, but there are many hills. Mountains and hills account for about two-thirds of the county's total area.
The northwest of Taishan is surrounded by hills, with heights generally ranging from 10 to 20 meters to 100 meters, but there are also highlands of more than 200 meters. As the watershed between Tanjiang River and Jidong River, Hengtang Hills connects the Beifeng Mountains in the east and the Dalong Mountains in the west. The Qinhuang Dianbing Mountain to the east of Hengtangwei is 280 meters high; the Yellow Snake Type and Dazao Mountains further to the east are both more than 220 meters high. Sanniangjing to the east of Dazao Mountain is the location of the scenic spot "Wenjing Diaogu". To the west of Hengtangwei, there is the 232-meter-high Gaozhang Ridge; further west, there is the 243-meter-high Nawang Mountain; further west, there are mostly hills below 100 meters, and there are only two more on the platform and Kaibian. Mashan, which is several hundred meters high.
Between Taishan Mountain and the sea, there are vast plains on both sides of the river. It is estimated that the county's plains, including coastal plains, plains in basins and between hills, account for about one-third of the county's total area. The largest plain in the county is Guanghai Plain. On this plain, there are six communes, Chonglou, Dooshan, Duhu, Duanfen, Guanghai and the northwest corner of Chixi commune, with 300,000 to 400,000 acres of fertile land. The ancient city of Guanghai in the south of the plain has always been an important coastal defense site for the motherland. To this day, on the hills of Nanwan on the outskirts of Guanghai City, there is still a stone inscription commemorating the victory of the Ming Dynasty in pacifying the Japanese pirates - "The sea will never have waves". The second larger plain is Haiyan Plain - a peninsula-shaped plain. The three communes of Haiyan, Wencun and Shalan on this plain are rich in fish, salt and rice. Wencun City in the west of this plain was the base and place of martyrdom for Wang Xing, the national hero who resisted the Qing Dynasty in the late Ming Dynasty. People still tell stories of their heroic struggle to this day. The three communes of Dajiang, Sanba and Baisha located in the north of Taishan are separated by some hills, but their northern parts are all part of the Tanjiang Plain.
There is also a part of the plain located in the basin. Because there are many mountains and hills in the county, some plains are often surrounded, forming a basin. In the north, there are Shuibu Basin, Sijiu Basin, Sanhe Basin, and Lian'an Basin; in the southwest, there are Nafu Basin, Shenjing Basin, and Dunzhai Basin. In addition, there are small alluvial plains between many low hills and in river valleys.
In the southern coastal area, there are also many local small plains, such as Xicheng Plain, Xiaojiang Plain, Doumen Plain, Naqin Plain, etc. Even in the mountains of Shangchuan and Xiachuan islands, there is a small plain on each side.
The seaside side of the coastal plain is often particularly low and becomes a lowland. The south and east of the Guanghai Plain, the south of the Haiyan Plain, the south of the Nafu Basin, the Shenjing Basin, and parts of other small coastal plains are all lowlands. Most of these lowlands are protected by dikes and become enclosed fields - most of which are single-created fields. Most of the existing 250,000 acres of cultivated land in the county are concentrated on these lowlands. There are also many beaches that can be cut into fields by building embankments.
