Osamushi Tezuka

If the development history of Japanese animation is divided into stages , and use masters from different periods to chronologically, no matter how many painters participate in the election, no matter how the voters vote, the "God of Manga" Osamu Tezuka will be unanimously elected as the founder of the Japanese animation industry.

Looking back at the development of Japanese comics, we will find that, like any domestic art facing the strong invasion of foreign culture, today’s Anime (specifically Japanese animation in English-speaking countries) is powerful in Europe and Asia, but it has gone through The road ahead was also bumpy.

Friends who have read "The Heart of the Swordsman" must remember that during the Restoration period, famous swordsmen, regardless of their sect, had painters specializing in selling their portraits. In fact, that is the prototype of Japanese comics, folk cursive writing.

In the late 19th century, influenced by the spread of European and American culture and the economic development of Japan, Japanese cursive writing gradually developed from single portraits to story chapters, but it was not popular. At that time, the so-called comics were just lower-class comics. Entertainment for the people.

The breakthrough of an art often needs to wait for the appearance of a person.

Tezuka Osamu (1928-1989 AD) was born in Osaka, Kansai. His real name was Tezuka Osamu, but he later changed his name. He started creating comics in middle school. In 1946, Tezuka applied to join an animation company, but was unsuccessful because he was judged to be "unsuitable for the animation industry." The following year, Tezuka Osamu began his comic serialization career in the "Mainichi Elementary School Student News" and embarked on the road of comics.

In 1947, Tezuka published his first major work, "New Treasure Island". He borrowed film shooting techniques, such as zoom, wide angle, overhead view, etc., to express comic scenes in conjunction with the development of the story, thereby making the solid comics "alive" and a new generation of Japanese comics was born. What the world calls "Japanese comics" actually started with Tezuka, a 19-year-old medical student.

In 1951, Osamu Tezuka graduated from Osaka University School of Medicine, moved to Tokyo, and devoted himself entirely to manga creation.

In 1952 (Showa 27), "Astro Boy" (also known as "Atom King Kong") came out and caused a sensation in Japan.

In addition to Dr. Panamizu, as Astro Boy's real father, Osamu Tezuka gave the little robot a spiritual connotation of innocence, kindness, bravery, and indomitability. In line with the background of the era when the post-war Japanese were in urgent need of spiritual reconstruction and eager to get rid of the interference of foreign powers, he successfully changed the Japanese people's prejudice that comics were "childish". The "Astro Boy" manga and later animated TV version were serialized intermittently for 13 years. Osamu Tezuka established his position in the Japanese comics industry with a small robot doll.

In 1956, Tezuka joined the famous "Toei Animation" studio and served as Layout (the picture in front of the screen, the basis for the celluloid film). This was the beginning of his entry into the animation industry.

In 1961, Osamu Tezuka founded the "Osamus Tezuka Animation Production Department" and changed its name to "MUSIHPRODUCTIONS" the next year, which means never withering. From then on, Tezuka began his animation career. He adapted "Astro Boy" and started broadcasting it on TV on New Year's Day in 1963. This was also Japan's first TV series cartoon. The animation of "Astro Boy" alone was serialized in Japan for four years. Since then, the Japanese comic industry has formed an unwritten practice of adapting successful works into TV animation features. Some people jokingly said that Tezuka filled the comic's bowl with rice.

"Kimba, The White Lion" is the second animated feature film introduced to mainland China after "Astro Boy". It is also a very important work of Tezuka. In addition to winning a series of domestic awards in Japan, it was also encouraged by the Venice Silver Lion and exported to the United States. Later, Disney produced the famous "Lion King" ("Lion King") based on Kimba's story, and even the protagonist's name was Simba.

For Tezuka, who joined the comics industry because of his admiration for Disney, and who has been serving as the standard bearer to resist Disney's invasion since becoming famous, I wonder if this can be regarded as a friendly joke.

In 1971, Tezuka resigned as the president of Mushi Production Company. In 1973, Mushi Company closed down due to operating difficulties.

Tezuka was not depressed because of the end of the company. He began a long journey, traveling all over the world to promote his "dream-like poetry" creative concept. During this period, he also completed two other important works of his: "Firebird" and "The Strange Doctor Dr. Qin".

Osamushi Tezuka died of stomach cancer in 1989 at the age of 61.

In the summer of 1991, an unprecedented comic exhibition was held in Tokyo, Japan, where the works of more than 500 famous contemporary painters were displayed. In order to commemorate Tezuka, the conference built a model of his lifetime residence, "Tokiwa-so", in the center of the exhibition hall. A number of models of protagonists from famous comics were also specially created at the window to pay tribute to this "God of Comics" .

Tezuka was a great dreamer. It was he who endowed Japanese comics with a strong personality and strong regional cultural color, and led the Japanese comics industry to gradually move towards in-depth thinking. Superman comics draw the line.

Tezuka not only strictly fulfilled his mission as an animator, he also left a legacy to future generations of painters. He has always focused on cultivating the successor force of Japanese comics and insisted on holding a comic award of the same name. Many well-known painters, such as Hojo Tsukasa, started their creative career after winning this grand prize.

It is no exaggeration to say that Osamu Tezuka is not only the father of the robot doll Astro Boy, but also the father of modern Japanese animation as a whole.
