Xuelao Ma Tang (Dafengcao Tang) Villagers living in rural areas have a special liking for the plants and trees on the mountains. Which plants and trees have medicinal effects on the human body are also passed down by word of mouth.
Gradually, a unique Hakka medicinal root food culture was formed.
On the dining table, a pot of delicious root soup is essential.
Therefore, the Hakka people have developed the ability to make various delicacies based solely on the aroma and taste of medicinal root soup.
So, what are the commonly used medicinal soups for Luhe Hakka people to make soup?
Then there is the "Xuelao Ma Tang?" that is passed down by the Hakka people in Luhe.
It is said that at the end of the Tang Dynasty, during the Huangchao Uprising, the ancestors of the Hakkas in the Central Plains migrated all the way south to the southern barbarian lands (today's Fujian Province) and other coastal directions to escape the war. Due to the humid climate in Lingnan, the ancestors often made soup with gale grass (Xue Laoma).
Drinking it is used to dispel wind and dampness. According to legend, a woman occasionally suffered from abdominal pain, swollen legs and other symptoms due to the humid weather after giving birth. She recovered after drinking Dafengcao (Xuelaoma) soup; because Dafengcao was too bitter and difficult to swallow, she became ill after one day.
A local woman used hens to cook soup together and found that the taste was particularly delicious and could be used as both medicine and food.
Therefore, the ancestors named it "Xuelao Ma Soup" to commemorate this woman (Xuelao Ma refers to women who speak Chaoshan dialect). From then on, "Xuelao Ma Chicken Soup" has been passed down to this day and has become a unique delicacy of the Luhe Hakka people.
, Luhe women who are postpartum must eat Xuelao sesame soup.
