Get started with the three layouts of Microsoft's new "Start" menu in the preview version of Win11

December 3 news, according to WindowsLatest reports, when you upgrade to Windows 11, you will immediately notice two major changes. First, the Start menu is now center-aligned in the taskbar instead of left-aligned. The second and most obvious change is that the Windows 11 operating system has completely canceled the live tiles in the Windows 8 era.

The shiny Live Tiles have been replaced by a mobile launcher-like panel. The Start menu now has two sections: Apps and Recommendations. Applications appear in a list, and the menu cannot be customized at all. You can only rearrange apps and unpin them.

Thankfully, Microsoft is aware of the limitations of the Windows 11 Start menu and is working hard to develop customization options. Customization options in the new Windows 11 Build 22509 will allow users to show more apps or recommended content in the Start menu, and these changes will be part of the next major update arriving in the fall of 2022.

To customize the Start menu, just right-click anywhere on the Start menu, select the Settings option, and open the Settings app.

As you can see in the screenshot, Microsoft has added new options to change the default layout of the Start menu. You can now have more app icons or more recommendations in the menu.

According to a Feedback Hub post, quite a few users are not impressed with the new "Recommendations" because it creates an empty space in the Start menu.

It also duplicates items that are already pinned to the Start menu. If you just want to stick with app pinning, just select the "More pinning" option in settings.

If you prefer "Recommendations" instead of pinned apps, just select the third option to have more recommendations. This can be helpful if you edit a lot of files and want to see those activities on the Start menu.

It is understood that in addition to the customization function of the "Start" menu, Microsoft has also fixed the bug of the "Start" menu. For example, a bug has been fixed that made the Start menu, search, task view, widgets, and chat icons appear large when the system zoom is set to 125%.

Similarly, another bug is that selecting the "Application Settings" option in the Start menu opens an incorrect settings window. Microsoft has now changed the shortcut for opening ms-settings:appsfeatures. Previously, the same link opened a list of installed apps.

Microsoft is also working on improving the taskbar, but drag-and-drop support and the ability to resize the Start menu are still missing.
