Small yellow croaker is also called Plum, Plum Fish, Xiaowang Fish, Xiaoxian, Koharu Fish, Small Yellow Croaker, Thick Scaled Fish and Flower Fish. All belong to teleost, Perciformes, Sciaenidae and Pseudosciaena. Mainly distributed in China's Bohai Sea, Yellow Sea and East China Sea, and mainly produced in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, Shandong and other coastal provinces.

Pseudosciaena crocea was once one of the important economic fish in China, and it is endemic to China. It is widely distributed from the south of the Yellow Sea in the north, through the East China Sea and Taiwan Province Strait, and to the east of Leizhou Peninsula in the South China Sea in the south. The fish is a warm-temperate group migratory fish, which often inhabits the middle and lower layers of the offshore waters within 60 meters. The reproductive season of Pseudosciaena crocea is spring and autumn. During the reproductive period, the fish migrate from the overwintering area in the open sea to the offshore in batches. As a valuable economic fish, Pseudosciaena crocea has long been favored by consumers. However, due to overfishing, the resources are seriously damaged.

Distribution map overwinters in the deep sea in winter and migrates to the coast in spring. After spawning in March-June, they are scattered in the offshore for feeding, mainly feeding on mysid shrimp, hairy shrimp and small fish, and return to the deep sea in late autumn. Pseudosciaena crocea has the feeding habits of zooplankton and swimming animals, and has little food selectivity, mainly feeding on zooplankton, fish and shrimp, among which zooplankton are mainly copepods, fish are mainly gobies, and shrimps are hairy shrimp, brown shrimp, white shrimp with ridged tail and puffed shrimp.

In the southern Yellow Sea and northern East China Sea, Pseudosciaena crocea mainly feeds on swimming animals, but the feeding intensity is different in different life periods (wintering period, spawning period and feeding period), among which the feeding intensity is the weakest in wintering period (1~ March), the spawning period (April-May) is in the middle, and the feeding period (6 ~1February).
