Biography
Madeline Carroll was born in On February 26, 1906, there was a sister Margaret at home who was 18 months younger than her. His father is an Irish linguistics professor and his mother is French. She was greatly influenced by her mother, who taught her French and some social etiquette, which would help her a lot in her future career. During her childhood, she often followed her family back to her father's hometown of Ireland for vacation. When she was 15 years old, she entered the University of Birmingham and received her Bachelor of Arts degree in the summer of 1926. After that, she faced two options. One was to become a French teacher, and the other was to continue her studies at the Sorbonne in Paris, where her father also studied. In her own words, she was very nervous and shy at that time and had already planned to devote the rest of her life to education, while her father really wanted her to obtain a master's degree.
However, in her last year of college, she joined a performance club. In March 1926, a French student invited her to participate in a drama performance, which changed her life. The owner of the Birmingham Touring Theater saw her perform and offered her a contract, an opportunity she passed up because her father disapproved of her acting career. She then went to Paris to continue her postgraduate studies, but soon returned to England to act in the theatre. Her father kicked her out of the house and cut off Carol's financial resources, so she worked as a French teacher at a girls' school near Birmingham. After three months of trying, she failed to find her dream acting job, so she worked as a private tutor in Birmingham.
In 1927, after saving enough money, she came to London and shot her first film in 1928. Because of this film, the relationship between father and daughter eased. In the same year, she met Alma Reville, Hitchcock's wife. The lady believed that this young girl could be a leading actress. In 1935, she and Hitchcock collaborated on the film Thirty, which was adapted from the novel. Nine steps. The next year she arrived in Hollywood and soon had the opportunity to star opposite actors such as Gary Cooper. However, most of her performances in Hollywood were flamboyant roles. She obtained American citizenship in 1943. However, during World War II, her sister died in the Battle of Britain. This heavy blow caused Madeleine to suspend her acting career. She returned to Britain to work for war relief. She worked as a nurse in a Red Cross field hospital and went to the European battlefields filled with bullets and was responsible for rescue work. Madeleine donated her castle in the suburbs of Paris to an orphanage housing 150 orphans. She also once called on groups of young people in California, USA, to knit clothes for the orphans. After the war she rarely made films, instead appearing in stage plays, radio plays and television. After retiring, she spent her remaining years on a farm near Paris. Madeleine died of pancreatic cancer in Spain on October 2, 1987 at the age of 81.
