Jujube is a deciduous shrub or small tree, up to 10m high. There are long branches, short branches and new branches. The long branches are smooth and hairless, and the young branches are slender and slightly curved in a zigzag shape. They are purple-red or gray-brown, with 2 stipule spines. The long thorns can reach 3cm, thick and straight, and the short thorns are lower. Curved, 4-6mm long; short branches are short, thick, oblong, emerging from old branches; current-year branchlets are green, drooping, solitary or in clusters of 2-7 on short branches. Single leaves are alternate, papery, petioles are 1-6mm long, and those on long branches can reach 1cm; leaves are oval, ovate-elliptical, 3-7cm long, 2-4cm wide, with an obtuse or rounded apex, with a small tip. Head, base slightly inclined, nearly round, with finely serrated edges, dark green above, hairless, light green below, hairless or sparsely pubescent along the veins; three veins emerge from the base.
