ROTTEN TOMATOES is an American website featuring movie-related reviews, information and news, whose parent company is IGN Entertainment.Founded in May 1998 by movie buff Senh Duong, the site has become a premier destination for movie consumers and fans. Based on rave reviews from the Chicago Sun-Times, New Yorker, USA Today, and many other media outlets, and with its many unique approaches to movie reviews, Rotten Tomatoes offers its users a full range of services, featured products, and communication communities.
The site's name comes from the light burlesque (vaudeville) days when audiences would throw tomatoes and other fruits and vegetables at the stage during bad performances. Good reviews were denoted by fresh red tomatoes and bad reviews by rotten green tomatoes.
The highest-rated movies on the site, with 100 percent "fresh" ratings, include "Rear Window" and "Toy Story 2. Conversely, more than 200 movies have a 0 percent "fresh" rating. The site tracks the content of all reviews (some major blockbusters reach about 250) and the percentage of positive reviews. If more than 60% of the reviews are positive, the movie is considered "fresh". On the other hand, if a film has less than 60% positive reviews, it is labeled as "rotten". There are two types of movie ratings, T-Meter Critics and Top Critics, the former being a combination of popular and professional critics' ratings, the latter being only the ratings of professional critics.
