All genera in the Agave family

A family in the order Liliaceae (Liliales). About 22 genera and at least 720 species, widespread in tropical, subtropical and temperate regions. Plants are short-based and often woody. Leaves usually basal in clusters, narrowly lanceolate, often fleshy, margins serrate. Flower clusters are large in most species, with numerous flowers. The fruit is a capsule or berry.

The leaves of the genus Agave (Agave) contain fiber and are an important fiber crop. Agave is taken from sisal (A. sisalana), which is the hard fiber (leaf fiber) of the best quality; American sisal (A. fourcroyoides), which produces the sisal of Hernacun; and Agave cantala, which produces the sisal of Luzon.
