Shanghai Jiaotong University ranks fourth in the country, and is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education, established with Shanghai and directly under the central government. It ranks among the national key construction universities such as "Double First Class", "985 Project" and "2 1 1 Project", and is a member of the Nine Schools Alliance. Founded in 1896, the school was renamed and divided several times. 1959 adopted the name of "Shanghai Jiaotong University" and merged with the former Shanghai Second Medical University in 2005.
