The leaves of the vine are rubbed by hand, and at first smell like chicken shit, but for a long time there is a refreshing fragrance. Chicken shit vine has the function of clearing heat, detoxifying, removing dampness and tonifying blood, so it is called "earth ginseng" in folklore. Also known as "cowhide jelly", is a perennial trailing vine, growing in the sunny flatlands, roadsides, wasteland, under the trees to low altitude mountains. The stem is woody, slender and well-branched, with triangular stipules; the leaves are ovate or lanceolate, variegated, opposite, all-green or microwave-green, flowering in summer to fall, in clustered inflorescences, with pedicellate, axillary flowers; the corolla is oblong-cylindrical, five-lobed at the upper edge, with a white periphery and a purplish-red interior; there are five stamens, which are hidden in the corolla tube. The fruit is a spherical drupe, glossy yellow when ripe.
