Why do Hakkas build tulou?
This should start with the history of Hakkas. The Hakka people in general originated from the Qin Dynasty to the Song Dynasty, and constantly migrated from the Central Plains to the special ethnic group in the border area of Fujian, Guangdong and Jiangxi due to various reasons such as war, famine and regime alternation. They not only inherited the traditional Han culture, but also integrated the cultures of She, South Vietnam, Fujian and Vietnam. As a foreign resident, it is not very easy to establish a foothold in the local area. In addition, Hakka people not only want to communicate with local people, but also are constantly harassed by wild animals, mountain thieves and pirates from the coast in strange environments. In desperation, Hakkas built this earth building with defensive fortifications, using fireproof and waterproof rammed earth materials, designing small and high windows, and reserving gun and arrow holes in the walls. The earliest round tulou can be traced back to the Tang Dynasty when Chen Yuanguang stationed troops in Zhangzhou, and 58 people settled in southern Fujian. Because there are many hills in southern Fujian, it is not suitable to build a square cottage on a round hill, so the cottage is also round. Today, many round hills in southern Fujian still have the remains of ancient military camps. These round cottages are the prototype of round earth buildings. At first, the cottage had only one floor, but it was widely adopted by Hakkas who migrated, and gradually evolved into multi-storey houses. It should be mentioned that earth buildings are not only built by Hakkas, but also by Minnan ethnic groups in Zhangzhou Quanzhou and other places along the coast of Fujian. The records of tulou in literature first appeared in Ming Dynasty. Among them, The Records of Rebuilding Qiantai recorded that bandits in western Fujian built two earth buildings at the junction of Yong 'an and Liancheng in the thirty-eighth year of Jiajing (1559). 1573' s "The Records of Zhangzhou Prefecture's Military Defense" records that residents in Zhangzhou began to build earth buildings to resist pirates.
