Lu You's original wife was a lady of the Tang clan in the same county, and after they got married, they had "good sex" and "played the best music", and were a loving couple. However, Lu's mother, who was one of the organizers of the marriage, became disgusted with her daughter-in-law and forced Lu to give up Tang.
In the case of Lu You's counseling, pleading and ineffective, the two were finally forced to separate, Tang's remarried to "the same county son" Zhao Shicheng, and there was no news of each other. A few years later, on a spring day, Lu You met Tang in his hometown of Shanyin (present-day Shaoxing), in the Shen Garden, near the Yumiao Temple in the south of the city, where he was traveling with his husband. Tang arranged for food and wine to show her comfort to Lu You. Lu You was so touched by the feelings of the people he met that he wrote this poem in his drunkenness and inscribed it on the wall of the garden.
