General situation of Matteo Ricci and foreign missionary cemeteries
In the 26th year of Guangxu in Qing Dynasty (1900), the cemetery was destroyed, and some ancillary buildings were also destroyed. After the Qing government rebuilt the cemetery and built a new church, embedding 77 tombstones on the outer wall of the church. During the "Cultural Revolution", the tombs of Matteo Ricci and other nearby missionaries were razed, the church was demolished, and the tombstones of Matteo Ricci and others were buried underground. The rebuilt tomb of Matteo Ricci faces south. At the front of the tomb is the "Tomb of the Jesuits in the 38th year of Wanli in the Ming Dynasty" (16 10). The monument is decapitated, with a height of 2.7 meters and a width of 0.94 meters, and a height of 0.6 meters and a width of10.2 meters. About 1 m behind the monument is the tomb. 1987 demarcated the protection scope and construction control zone, and the protection scope was within the existing Matteo Ricci tombstone wall.
