Morphological characteristics of Perilla

Perilla is an annual upright herbaceous plant with a stem height of 0.3-2 meters, green or purple, dark diamond-shaped, and the stem is covered with long hairs. The leaves are broadly oval or round, 7-13 cm long and 4.5-10 cm wide. The leaves have short or pointed front ends, round or wide wedge-shaped bases, and coarsely serrated edges. The leaf color is green or purple, or only the lower part is purple. There are sparse hairs on the upper part of the leaves and attached hairs on the lower parts. Cyme 2-flowered, forming a terminal axillary raceme, 1.5-15 cm long, densely villous, biased to one side; the bracts are broadly ovate or nearly round, about 4 mm long and wide, with a short pointed apex. Covered with reddish-brown glandular spots, glabrous, with membranous edges; pedicel 1.5 mm long, densely pubescent. The nuts are spherical, gray-brown, about 1.5 mm in diameter, and have reticular patterns on them. Perilla flowers bloom from August to November and bears fruit from August to December.
