On the advice of Fan Zeng, Xiang Yu and Fan Zeng besieged Xingyang with the intention of wiping out Liu Bang. Liu Bang was so afraid that he took Chen Ping's ploy to alienate Xiang Yu and Fan Zeng, and Xiang Yu then deprived Fan Zeng of his power. Fan Zeng did not expect Xiang Yu to suspect him of colluding with Liu Bang and was so furious that he retired to his hometown, but he fell ill and died on the way.

In the fourth year of Han (203 BC), Xiang Yu captured Xingyang and executed Zhou Cao and Fir [zōng] Gong, the guards of Xingyang.
