Because of this, every time before New Year's Day, temples and monasteries all over China will ring 108 bells to welcome the New Year.
The ringing of the bell
Why is the big bell set at 108?There are two opinions: one is that the Gezhi Jingyuan quotes the Konyu Yun: "Each time the bell strikes 108, it is the twelfth month of December, the twenty-fourth season, and the seventy-two seasons." It is 108, symbolizing a yearly cycle that is eternal. This shows that in an agrarian society, people were hoping to be blessed with food and clothing through the Buddha.
Another theory is that Buddhism believes that people have 108 kinds of worries and 108 strokes can lift them. The bell rings and says, "When you hear the bell, you are lightly annoyed; wisdom, bodhi life; out of hell, out of the fire pit; may you become a Buddha, all your life." That is why the sutra or mantra is recited 108 times, the number of Buddha beads is 108, and even the number of Bodhisattvas is 108. all these are meant to remove one's worries and to achieve the meaning of excellent auspiciousness. The bell is rung 108 times, which is called "108 rings" in Buddhism, in order to relieve worldly troubles. General temple in the morning every time you ring the bell, it is called the morning bell and evening drum, as a reminder to practitioners to be diligent, careful not to let go.
