The project is located on the western peninsula of Yanqi Lake in Huairou, Beijing, and is the core area of the North Control Yanqi Lake International Convention Center, covering an area of 650,000 square meters, and is positioned as a national conference center, an important initiative to enhance the status of Beijing's "world city", with a large-scale conference center, boutique resort hotels, VIP villas, and exhibition halls on the island. The island has a large conference center, boutique resort hotels, VIP villas, exhibition halls and other facilities.
Planning and design:
The island is surrounded by water on three sides, with a view of Yanshan Mountain and the Ancient Great Wall in the distance, and is located in a place of mountains and beautiful water, which expresses the concept of sustainable development that strives for harmony with nature. The plan is to dredge the waterway on the west side, turning the peninsula into an independent island and enhancing its dignity and privacy. The existing lakeshore, native trees and original landforms are fully protected, and the north-south and east-west axes are formed along the west bank of the East Lake, relying on the mountains and the water, skillfully integrating the ceremonial spatial sequences with the natural texture, symbolizing the harmony of the sky, the earth and the human being. On the central axis, the core area of the international conference center and exhibition halls, and the north and south ends of the formation of the summer garden, winter garden two natural landscape gardens, **** structure of the main public **** open space. According to the different terrain features of mountains, waterfronts, peninsulas and gorges, five villa clusters are dispersed around the island. The villas are connected by a circular main road and a branch road at the end, allowing each villa to enjoy different scenery while maintaining privacy. This approach to gardening, which draws on the Chinese style of urbanization, is both an inheritance of tradition and a response to nature.
Architectural design:
The Summit, as a masterpiece, is a place that celebrates harmony and the blending of civilizations. The richness of regional culture maps the diversity of world civilization, and this cultural concept of "harmony and difference" is applied to the design of the VIP villa. The island has the geomorphological features of low in the south and high in the north, and water in the east of the west and the east, which are aligned with the map of China. The five villa clusters around the island represent the natural and cultural features of different regions in China, which highlight the inclusiveness of the Chinese civilization and also give people a more diversified cultural experience. Each villa is integrated with the geomorphology of its location, built according to the terrain, or living in the mountains with a faraway view, or facing the water and watching the lake. The villas express the Chinese view of nature in the way of "love of mountains and water". The courtyard, as the core space of the Chinese architecture, becomes the theme of the design, bringing nature in to create a spiritual experience of introspection and tranquility. Each VIP villa is a small boutique hotel, providing space for fitness, recreation, and cultural appreciation while perfecting the functions of guests' governmental affairs, socializing, and residence. This cultural heritage is accomplished through a modern approach, seeking a balance between Chinese elements and international perspectives.
The boutique hotel encircles a natural water bay on the eastern shore of the island, which is dredged into a central water courtyard. Utilizing the difference in elevation from the shore to the lake, the hotel creates an entrance lobby experience with a distant view of the lake and a close view of the courtyard. The hotel volume is dissolved into seven single units, forming three groups of semi-enclosed courtyards, taking in the scenery of the lake and mountains. The dining and leisure space on the first floor is close to the water, dialoguing with nature, and has a trestle bridge to bring the view into the lake. All guest rooms have landscape bathrooms and balconies with a view of the lake.
Ecological design:
According to the original site characteristics, the whole core island is divided into mountain, flat land, waterfront and other types, drawing a scroll of landscape painting. In terms of waterfront ecology, considering that the core island is a pro-lake island with high heterogeneity of ecosystems, an ecological promenade was finally made around the periphery of the island to form a natural ecological barrier, and then the high drop of dry and abundant water level was alleviated through the artificially excavated nascent waterway. For the flatland ecology, the shoreline was improved by installing resting places such as wooden stakes and stones to attract wildlife and improve biodiversity. As for mountain ecology, secondary native trees are retained as much as possible, and landscape vegetation forms four blocks of landscape recreation area, urban forest area, wetland restoration area, and woodland restoration area, which hides the buildings in the natural system.
Landscape design:
At the same time, the original vegetation was preserved to the greatest extent possible in the landscape design, and efforts were made to restore the grasses and trees that had to be transplanted because of the construction after the construction. In this regard, AECOM pursued the use of plants native to the island rather than importing exotic plants from outside. In the end, through revegetation, wetland restoration, vegetation preservation and barge remodeling, a "peach blossom paradise" of countryside, fields, fruit groves, waterfront ecology, natural woodlands and gardens was created. Pedestrians strolling between the island's winding road, not only can overlook the Mutianyu Great Wall in the lofty mountains of Yanshan Mountains, but also can be sent to the landscape, feel the "unity of man and nature" state of mind.
The whole design tries to balance openness and privacy, China and the world, tradition and modernity, nature and humanity. With the concept of celebrating harmony, the natural form tries to interpret the "real China" in today's era for the world.
