1. Foshan, as an important birthplace of Cantonese cuisine, is still the deserved big brother of all local cuisines to this day. This can be seen in the number of cuisines registered. As of October 1, 2015, big data from the Foshan area on VWD.com shows that among the 17,786 businesses with cuisine registrations in Foshan, Cantonese cuisine accounts for 17%, ranking first among all traditional cuisines.
2. According to the data of Shenzhen VW Dianping.com as of November 20, 2015, there are 84,507 restaurants in Shenzhen***, among which there are 7,958 Cantonese restaurants, accounting for 9.4% of all restaurants. Although the share of Cantonese cuisine still tops the list of cuisine registrations, it is a much lower share compared to Foshan.
3. The difference in dietary tastes between the two places may stem from the proportional composition of the population. According to statistics from the public security department in September 2014, the current resident population of Foshan has exceeded 8 million, of which there are more than 4.22 million registered transients, with the proportion of foreign population at 52%. Shenzhen, on the other hand, is a city of immigrants, with a resident population of 10,628,900 at the end of 2013, including a household population of 3,104,700, with a ratio of foreigners as high as 70.79%. The diversity of the population also leads to more diverse eating habits of Shenzhen people.
