At the end of the Qing Dynasty, Zeng Zongyan, the director of Ren Shan, took up the post as a servant from the Hanlin Academy. Zeng Zongyan was a reformist and supported the Reform Movement of 1898. He actively participated in the Fujian Society, a reform organization established in Fujian Guild Hall in Beijing under the auspices of Lin Xu, and became one of the backbones. After the reform failed, he returned to his hometown and became the head of Fengchi Academy, which lasted for 85 years.
