Expressway service area refers to a place for passengers and drivers to rest, and should provide parking lots, public toilets, gas stations, vehicle repair shops, restaurants and canteens, with an average distance of about 50 kilometers. The construction scale of service area should adapt to the future traffic growth.

The effective operation and high-quality service of the service area can better realize the social service value of expressway, increase the economic benefits of expressway investment companies, provide employment opportunities and solve the diversion of surplus personnel.
In addition, we can also take advantage of the opportunity of developing service areas to obtain scarce land resources at a lower land cost. Therefore, this paper analyzes the various functions of the service area by combing the relevant literature at home and abroad and combining the planning and construction status and development trend of expressway in China.
According to the planning scale and functional perfection, expressway services are divided into three types: first-class service area, second-class service area and third-class service area, and each type has its own characteristics.
