This school is the only full-time higher vocational and technical college of light industry in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. The college was established in 1956. In 2002, it was approved by the people's government of the autonomous region and filed by the Ministry of Education. It was independently rebuilt by the former Inner Mongolia Light Industry School and is under the jurisdiction of Baotou Municipal People's Government. After nearly 60 years of construction and development, the college has accumulated a profound foundation for running a school.
It has successively won the honors of "Civilized Unit of the Autonomous Region", "Advanced Grassroots Party Organization of the Autonomous Region", "Outstanding Social Contribution Unit of the Autonomous Region", "Model Unit of Baotou City", "Model Collective of National Unity and Progress in Baotou City" and "Introducing Advanced Units of Foreign Intellectual Work", and the College was rated as "Excellent" in the evaluation of talent training level of the Ministry of Education in 2007.
In April 2023, the school official website showed that the school covers an area of 662,842.24 square meters, with a total construction area (property area+non-property area) of 483,799.53 square meters, of which the student dormitory area is 103075.39 square meters; At present, there is 15 teaching department, offering 46 higher vocational majors, covering 15 categories; Students 13 179, including full-time vocational students 1 1462.

The total value of teaching instruments and equipment in the college is more than 50 million yuan. There are more than 50 experimental training rooms 150 for dairy products, electromechanical technology, analysis and inspection, biotechnology, electronics, art, clothing and catering, and more than 70 practical training bases operating well inside and outside the school, which provide a guarantee for cultivating highly skilled talents and serving local economic and social development.
The college strives for survival by quality, development by characteristics, and service for enterprises, and implements training modes such as "integration of multiple certificates", "order form", "alternation of work and study", "2+ 1" and "foreign teachers".
