Qingdao Grand Theatre is a landmark building of Qingdao's public cultural facilities. It was designed by German architects von Gerkon, Margo and partners.

Qingdao Grand Theatre is located in the west of Yunling Road, south of Nanling Road, north of Hong Kong East Road and east of the central axis of the commercial plaza in Laoshan District, Qingdao. Qingdao International Beer City, International Convention and Exhibition Center, Qingdao Museum and Shilaoren Beach are adjacent to it. After the grand theater is completed, it will become another gathering area for Qingdao's culture and leisure.

The Grand Theatre project has a total construction area of about 61,111 square meters, including a 1,611-seat grand theatre, a 1,211-seat concert hall and a 411-seat multi-function hall and other ancillary facilities, which can meet the functional needs of opera, ballet, drama, symphony, song and dance, folk art, acrobatics and large-scale variety shows, and has the ability to receive world-class art.

The Grand Theater is open independently

The mountains, seas and clouds in Qingdao constitute the design theme of the Grand Theater. Water is the source of life, the sea is the soul of the city, streams converge, the tides rise and fall, and the combination of heaven and earth creates the main body of the Grand Theatre.

The Grand Theatre is divided into four parts: the Grand Theatre, the Concert Hall and the Multifunctional Hall, the Reception Training Center and the Performing Arts Exchange Center. The four main functional parts can be opened independently without interfering with each other, and through the natural connection of the slatted beams and silver tops, a layout of being divided, combined and open on all sides is formed, which is integrated with the surrounding squares, greenery and roads. The elegant and natural form of the silver roof flows out of the rhythm of the surging waves, and it is like the floating and unpredictable sea of clouds.

The undulating wall creates the best acoustic effect

The grand theater is designed with a platform size of 12×18 meters and an audience hall of 1,611 seats. By using highly flexible equipment, it can be suitable for different large-scale performances, such as opera, ballet, drama, large-scale magic show, acrobatic show and so on.

The interior design of the auditorium follows the basic design inspiration, creating a clear relationship between the organic architecture and the natural landscape. The interior space is defined by the undulating wall like the inner surface of a cave, which is developed from the basic requirements of acoustics. The bronze metal mesh covering the lighting equipment makes the indoor space slightly shiny and creates a festive atmosphere.

The shape, size, decorative materials and air conditioning equipment of the auditorium are all designed by architectural acoustics to ensure the best acoustic effect and meet the international high-level performance requirements. The metal perforated plate can adjust the reverberation time

The concert hall has an audience hall of 1,211 seats, which can accommodate the performance of the standard 4-tube band. The square area of the multi-function hall consists of 25 independent lifting platforms, which can be used for almost all purposes, such as meetings, exhibitions and fashion shows. The whole space is designed as a dark cube, and the wall is covered with a rotatable metal perforated plate, which can be used as both a sound absorbing plate and a reflecting plate, and can adjust the reverberation time in the room according to the different requirements of classical music and electroacoustic. The building of the reception and training center constitutes the eastern boundary of the whole complex. There are restaurants, conference halls, guest rooms, etc., to provide people with perfect and thoughtful supporting services. Free-flowing space is designed

Performing Arts Exchange Center is a building located on the west side, designed as a free-flowing space, including commercial and public functions. The center has an art gallery, a database and rooms for reading, audio-visual, music appreciation, recording and studio. There are also large, medium and small rehearsal halls, which can provide performance rehearsal and music education for young people.

Transportation

The Grand Theatre is south of Hong Kong Road, the main road of the city, and there are many bus stops. The secondary roads on the north side and the east side are used for the entrance and exit of carts and buses in the whole building complex. The platform with an elevation of 4.5 meters connects the north and south squares, and at the same time serves as a public platform to guide people to the halls with different performance functions. The audience can reach through the big steps or elevators for the disabled. The open layout of the building on all sides better solves the flow and entrance of vehicles, spectators, staff and goods.

Parking lot

The underground parking lot of the Grand Theatre is designed with 311 parking spaces, and there are 211 above-ground parking spaces on the east side of the building. The whole building can accommodate more than 511 small and medium-sized cars.

Operation

Qingdao Grand Theatre Project adopts the mode of government policy guidance and support, and enterprises participate in market-oriented operation. Qingdao Guoxin Industry Co., Ltd. undertakes the investment, construction and operation of Qingdao Grand Theatre Project. The main body of the project collects architectural design schemes at home and abroad, and seven design units including German GMP, French Hefeide, Canadian Carlos, British RMJM, Beijing Architectural Design and Research Institute, Tsinghua University Architectural Design and Research Institute and East China Architectural Design and Research Institute participated in the design. In addition, the project is jointly invested by the government and Qingdao Guoxin Industrial Co., Ltd.. It is reported that after the completion of the project, Guoxin Company will conduct market-oriented management and operation of the Grand Theatre.
