Nanjing also has a Shanghai Road, but it is far from being a commercial street. The most famous shopping street in Nanjing, besides Fuzimiao, is Xinjiekou, which is also a big deal and has been labeled as the "No.1 shopping district in China".
Xinjiekou is located in the center of Nanjing, Zhongshan East Road, Zhongzheng Road, Hanzhong Road and Zhongshan Road, four 40-meter-wide boulevard in the intersection, the middle of the formation of a ring-shaped Xinjiekou Square, a bronze statue of Dr. Sun Yat-sen as a separator, was named China's most famous commercial street in 2005, and was named the first batch of China's key demonstration of the city's business district in 2011.
The history of Xinjiekou can be traced back to 1,500 years ago. Ancient relics from 1,500 years ago have been found on Huaihai Road in Xinjiekou, proving that at that time rivers crisscrossed the area and the water network was well-developed.
And during the Tongzhi period of the Qing Dynasty, the place name of Xinjiekou officially appeared, initially as a street between Sugar Square Bridge and Mingwalang. But until 1928, Xinjiekou remained an old-fashioned neighborhood.
It was not until December 1929 that the Capital Plan designated Xinjiekou as a commercial district, and in the "Golden Decade" between 1927 and 1937, Xinjiekou was transformed into a commercial hub of Nanjing, with unprecedented prosperity.
After so many years of wind and rain, Xinjiekou has not declined, but rather flourished, with modern services, finance, entertainment, culture and catering, and tourism showing a boom, and has become the first choice for shopping and sightseeing, recreation, and business offices in the Nanjing metropolitan area.
