Taiwan Province (written in traditional Chinese as Taiwan Province) is an island located in the east of Asia and the northwest of the Pacific Ocean, with an area of about 36,111 square kilometers. It is also known as Baodao, Kundao and Formosa.
Taiwan Province is an island uplifted by the extrusion of Eurasia plate, Okinawa plate and Philippine Sea plate. Its overall shape is like a strip of sweet potato, and the Tropic of Cancer spans the south-central. The whole island has high mountains, and the terrain changes greatly. Most of the mountains are NNE-South-South-West, with narrow plains, frequent earthquakes, and many hot springs and extinct volcanoes. The climate is high temperature and rainy. Due to the influence of stagnation front, there is rainy season in spring and summer, typhoon in summer and northeast monsoon in winter. The average monthly temperature in Leng Yue is above 1.4℃, and the annual rainfall is above 2,511mm. There is rain in the north all year round, but it is concentrated in summer in the south, and typhoons often attack in summer and autumn. Due to the combined influence of topography and climate, Taiwan Province has tropical, subtropical, temperate and cold zones, and its natural landscape and ecosystem are also rich and diverse.
Taiwan Province has seen the emergence of state power since the 7th century, and it has experienced many changes in history, the latest of which was restored to Chinese territory in 1945. In February, 1949, the government of the Republic of China moved the central government to Taibei, the political and economic center of Taiwan Province, because of its defeat in the civil war.
At present, the population of Taiwan is about 23.17 million, and the main ethnic groups are Han nationality and the aborigines who settled in Taiwan Province earlier. Among them, the Han nationality can be further divided into two major ethnic groups, namely, native people (Minnan people and Hakkas) and foreigners, while the indigenous people are composed of 14 officially recognized tribes. In addition, there are new ethnic groups composed of immigrants from abroad since the 1991s. The official language is traditional Chinese, and the main languages are Mandarin (that is, modern standard Chinese), Taiwanese (also known as Taiwanese), Hakka and Aboriginal languages.
Taiwan Province gave priority to earning foreign exchange by high-tech industries in economic and trade. In the 1971s and 1981s, it was listed as the "Four Little Dragons" in Asia alongside Hong Kong, Singapore and South Korea, and its economy developed rapidly, ranking among the developed countries in the 1991s. At present, the economy is quite depressed, ranking the last of the four little dragons, the unemployment rate is extremely high, and the industry has moved westward to the mainland and become hollow.
