Introduction of Canshan Temple

Canshan Temple is located in the Gusu District of Suzhou. It was established in the Southern Dynasty (502-519 AD) during the reign of Liang Xiaotianjian. It was originally called "Miaoli Ping Pagoda". Hanshan Temple covers an area of about 13,000 square meters, with a building area of more than 3,400 square meters.

Hanshan Temple belongs to the Linji School of Zen Buddhism. During the Zhengan period of the Tang Dynasty, two famous monks of the time, Hanshan and Xiqian, founded Hanshan Temple. Hanshan Temple was destroyed by fire five times (one time said seven times) in more than 1,000 years, and was last rebuilt in the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty. Cold Mountain Temple was historically one of the ten most famous temples in China. There are many historical relics in the temple, including stone carvings by Zhang Timing, stone statues found in Cold Mountain, and fragments of inscriptions by Wen Zhengming and Tang Yin.

Most of the halls of Hanshan Temple are built in the Qing Dynasty, including the Hall of Shengxiong, the Building for Collecting Sutras, the Bell Tower, the Stele Corridor, the Peak River Building, and the Frost Bell Pavilion. The architectural layout of Hanshan Temple does not have a strict central axis. The ancient stone arch bridge in front of the main gate of Hanshan Temple is Jiangcun Bridge, and the pile of yellow walls between the bridge and the main gate is called Shoubi.

There are two long stone carvings embedded on both sides of the flower bed on the left side of the main garden of the Hanshan Temple, one of which is the 'Cold Trace' carved during the Chongzuo period of the Ming Dynasty; and at the end of the Qing Dynasty, Cheng Dequan, the governor of Jiangsu Province, inscribed the 'Wonderful Li Zongfeng'. Out of the Da Xiong Bao Dian, on the left is the Puming Pagoda connected to the Abbot's Room, and on the right is the Bell Tower, famous for hearing the midnight bell. The small two-story building in front is the sutra tower.
