Dongchang lake, founded in the third year of Song Xining (1070), is known as the "West Lake in the North". When you board the Guangyue Building and look around, the first thing you see is the lake around the city, with vast waters. Clear lake water surrounds the ancient city like a huge colorful satin, and patches of lake water are embedded in the ancient city like mirrors. Lake light and wave shadow complement each other with the iron tower, Guangyue Building, Shanshan Guild Hall and other places of interest, adding charming colors to Liaocheng. Dongchang lake covers an area of 4.2 square kilometers with a water depth of 2-3 meters, which is slightly smaller than the West Lake in Hangzhou and five times that of Daming Lake in Jinan. It is a rare artificial lake in northern China. Dongchang lake was developed on the basis of the original moat. As early as the third year of Xining in Song Dynasty, when the city was dug, a moat and its surrounding depressions were formed. Later, in order to prevent the nearby river from being deeply immersed in the city, dikes were built outside the depressions around the city. After the establishment of People's Republic of China (PRC), the government adopted the comprehensive control measures of "digging ditches to discharge pollutants, repairing sluice gates to divert water, building artificial lakes and cultivating fish and lotus roots together".
