A Chinese Odyssey was filmed in Bao Bei Film and Television City, a small town in Ningxia. In the first half of 1994, Hong Kong producer Chen Peihua began to contact Xi 'an Film Studio for filming. When he first saw the outline of the script, A Chinese Odyssey did not attract more interest from western film studios. However, considering the market appeal of Stephen Chow and the commercial interests of Hong Kong films, Xiying Factory agreed to cooperate and chose Bao Bei Film and Television City, Ningxia Town, which has filmed Red Sorghum and other films as the location shooting base. In July and August, 1994, a Chinese Odyssey started shooting. A Chinese Odyssey is a series of tragicomedy films jointly produced by Stephen Chow Caixing Film Company and Xi 'an Film Studio, directed by Liu Zhenwei and starring Stephen Chow, Athena Chu, Ng Man Tat, Lan Jieying and Karen Mok. The series "A Chinese Odyssey" consists of two films, Moonlight Box of a Chinese Odyssey and Wedding of the Great Sage of a Chinese Odyssey, which tells a sad and happy love story that spans time and space. The film was released in China, Hongkong and the Mainland on October 21th, 1995, and it didn't start to spread in mainland universities and online until 1997. The 21th anniversary of the film's release, A Chinese Odyssey 3 was released in Chinese mainland on September 4th, 2116.
