Studying in the United States
Zuo/Lin Gongzi

As mentioned in the three favorite teaching forms of American professors, many times, there will be a combination of various teaching methods in a course, and professors also have their own teaching styles and teaching methods. I've also heard that some professors are cool and bring nothing to class. When they arrive at the classroom, they sit cross-legged on the lecture table and ask what you want to listen to in this class, which can be very popular with students.

As you know, American classrooms are very casual. In class, everyone talks and even walks at will. Sometimes the professor forgets to drag the class after class, and the anxious students directly pick up their schoolbags and walk out of the classroom. It is normal for American students to eat in class. Although the hamburger smells delicious, the people who eat it are still listening attentively, and they never give in when they want to express their personal views, so they chew the sandwich and talk. Harvard's MBA class starts at eight o'clock in the morning. Many students come into the classroom with coffee and hot dogs in one hand, and have classes while eating.

But if you think that American universities have no classroom discipline, you are all wet. In the United States, basically all professors will repeatedly declare that they can't use any electronic equipment in class and can't play with mobile phones in class? Forget it, the professor will come to you directly and ask what you are doing with your mobile phone, and reiterate that electronic devices are not allowed in my class. Never showed any pity.

When I was in China, I used to take notes with iPad, and I never brought a paper notebook. In my first professional class, Organizational Behavior and Theory, I naturally took notes with the iPad. After a while, an old professor with white hair in his sixties stood on the platform and said to me, that classmate, don't use electronic equipment. I looked around and realized it was me, so I said, I'm taking notes.

The professor came to me: no, I can't use electronic equipment in my class. I am anxious: no, this is my notebook. I use it to take notes. The professor answered me: I won't interfere with your other courses, but this is my class. My home. You have to listen to me.

When I first arrived in America, I was suddenly at a loss. You know, I haven't taken notes in my notebook for at least two years. You know, in China, some people take notes in class, and teachers already appreciate the students' intentions-most students just take pictures with their mobile phones.

And in America, take pictures with your mobile phone? You will be treated as an alien-Americans look at you strangely with wondering eyes: Why do people take photos with their mobile phones as notes? To tell you the truth, I have attended so many classes, and I have never seen anyone take notes from a teacher with a mobile phone in class. Many American universities, including the world's top universities, have clear regulations that it is forbidden to shoot teaching content with mobile phones in class, or even to take notes with laptops. Moreover, all professors write calligraphy on the blackboard in class. How dare you just sit in a chair and take pictures with your mobile phone?

Most American professors like to write directly on the blackboard. Although there are all kinds of projectors and slide projectors in American classrooms, professors use PPT or projection, video and other technologies to assist teaching. Even in the computer department of Stanford University, many subjects are taught without computers at all, and professors still insist on writing on the blackboard with chalk. Why is it so traditional? Advanced and convenient, can't we use all the technologies produced for the convenience of human beings?

The professor mentioned above who won't let me take notes on the iPad, I went to chat with him after class. My heart is full of resentment-how nice it is to use electronic equipment, so I don't need to bring so many heavy notebooks, and I'm not afraid of losing them after archiving, and it's convenient to search and locate, so I can go wherever I want. You stubborn old man don't want to use advanced electronic equipment, so forget it. We young people always need to make progress. I'm full and trying to convince the old professor. As a result, he only said one sentence: I respect my work and my students. I write with chalk to help you understand the teaching content. I hope my students can also respect my calligraphy works.

So how dare you use electronic notes? When a white-haired professor expresses his respect for you as a student in such a serious and persistent way.

I once met a professor who said why he didn't like teaching with PPT. "I don't like PPT, because only by taking you step by step can you learn something."

Indeed, some subjects need a certain reasoning process. If the teacher only shows the PPT prepared in advance, the students will not understand the reasoning process. If you don't copy it yourself, you won't leave any impression in your mind. You can't master these subjects at all. In some subjects, each class is brand-new, and the professor writes everyone's valuable opinions on the blackboard one by one, instead of typing out the standard answers one by one with PPT.

So few professors make a PPT and use it once and for all. I'd rather write on the blackboard with my heart in every class. Many classrooms in the United States push up and down several big blackboards. In math class this semester, I found that every classroom in the teaching building of math department has blackboards on three sides except the wall with windows!

So how can you take notes or even take pictures without using your mobile phone? Even professors are diligently reviewing so that they can give lectures smoothly without relying on PPT tips.

Up to now, all my class notes are handwritten, and all A4 loose-leaf books can be added, improved and modified at any time. I have to admit that handwritten notes on paper are more efficient. I have an impression of handwriting, especially in several of my economics classes. I can't live without all kinds of models and drawings. I painted them once and studied them. Moreover, the notebook records are easy to modify, and you can also record your own supplementary content at different stages, with obvious emphasis.

Lin Gongzi, who used to be cool, is becoming more and more "rustic" in Mei Village. But even in China, no matter what the class is like, I still belong to the type of taking notes. What about you? Do you want to keep taking pictures?

After writing these articles, my son found that it was too easy for you to muddle along in China. It takes courage to actively cooperate with the teacher to take notes and answer the teacher's questions, because if you are not careful, you will be regarded as a different kind; In America, it is too difficult for you to muddle along, because you need great courage and psychological endurance. The students around us are actively contributing their wisdom and participating in the study. It's hard to muddle along.

This is also the reason why there are often foreign students who can't bear the long-term pressure and have mental problems or even commit suicide. Many times, it's not just a problem of high academic pressure, but also a question of whether they have integrated into the learning and education methods in North America and kept up with the rhythm.

So the next article may talk about what kind of people are relatively more suitable for studying in North America and what kind of people are relatively unsuitable for studying abroad. You can also continue to talk about learning. See you then.
