Emperor Qianlong visited Changzhou six times before and after he went down to the south of the Yangtze River, and once lived in the home of Qian Weicheng, the champion of Changzhou. At breakfast that day, Qian Weicheng prepared a bowl of bean curd soup for Gan Long, plus two fried dough sticks and a sesame seed cake. Gan Long thought it had a unique taste and ate it with relish. He repeatedly said "delicious, delicious" and asked Changzhou people how to have soup for breakfast.
Qian Weicheng told Qianlong a story, saying it was related to Zhu Yuanzhang, the founding emperor of the Ming Dynasty. According to legend, when Zhu Yuanzhang became a monk, he followed the abbot to visit Changzhou Honglian Temple. There was a drought in Changzhou that year, and it didn't rain for more than 50 days in a row. In the year of disaster, Honglian Temple could not produce anything delicious. In the kitchen, rice grains, green leaves, tofu blocks and famous Changzhou dried tofu were poured into the pot to heat the back end for the abbot and Zhu Yuanzhang to eat. After Zhu Yuanzhang, who was half hungry and half full, wolfed down his food for a while, there was still a delicious aftertaste on his tongue and lips. He asked the master what soup it was, and the master said it was "Pearl Jade White Jade Soup" (pearl is rice grain, jade is cabbage leaf, and white jade is tofu block). After Zhu Yuanzhang proclaimed himself emperor, he often missed the delicious "Pearl Jade White Jade Soup" he had eaten in Changzhou Honglian Temple, so he invited the chef of Honglian Temple to Nanjing City and asked him to make it for him. After eating it, Zhu Yuanzhang felt bland and not as delicious and refreshing as before. He asked, "Why is Master's soup not as wonderful and delicious as before?" The chef said, "Only hungry people will feel delicious when they eat. Now that you are the emperor, you can eat all the delicious food in the world. That soup is just the common people's home cooking, so it is naturally not as delicious as the royal royal meal ... "In order not to forget the sufferings and kindness of the Li people, Zhu Yuanzhang often asked the chef to make" Zhuyu Baiyu soup "for him as breakfast.
After listening to this, Gan Long suddenly realized that Changzhou people had tofu soup for breakfast to express their gratitude.
