This name indicates that the ruling power of this area was weak, so it became a place where the three religions and the five trades and professions gathered. Fortune-tellers, story-tellers, opera singers, handlers, wild medicine sellers, and all kinds of entertainers came here to make a living. At the same time, restaurants, entertainment, clothing, shoes and hats, department stores, etc. also came into being, the South City gradually developed into a lower-class people's entertainment shopping center. During the Republic of China (R.O.C.) years, the warlord Li Chun's Dongxing Company and the late Qing Dynasty aristocrat Rongyuan's Rongye Company purchased properties in Nanshi, which further contributed to the prosperity of Nanshi. Due to the weak government control, the city also became a place to hide dirt, brothels and casinos, and gangs were rampant for a while. After the liberation, the South City has been cleaned up the dirt, but still maintains a movie theater, food, clothing, department stores concentrated in the characteristics of the integrated consumer center.
