About 70 percent of Shanghai's waste is disposed of at the Shanghai Laogang Solid Waste Base. But the base can't process garbage fast enough to keep up with the rate at which it's generated. So regarding the end of the garbage, the first phase of the Laogang Wet Waste Project, a major project in Shanghai and the largest wet waste resource treatment project in the city, will reportedly be put into operation at the end of next year.

Composting treatment

The domestic garbage is piled up into heaps, insulated to 55~70 degrees Celsius for storage and fermentation, and with the help of microbial decomposition in the garbage, the organic matter is broken down into inorganic nutrients. After composting, the household garbage becomes hygienic and odorless humus.
