How does Shanghai handle household waste?

About 70 percent of Shanghai's waste is disposed of at the Shanghai Laogang Solid Waste Base. But the base can't process garbage fast enough to keep up with the rate at which it's generated. So regarding the end of the garbage, the first phase of the Laogang Wet Waste Project, a major project in Shanghai and the largest wet waste resource treatment project in the city, will reportedly be put into operation at the end of next year.

Composting treatment

The domestic garbage is piled up into heaps, insulated to 55~70 degrees Celsius for storage and fermentation, and with the help of microbial decomposition in the garbage, the organic matter is broken down into inorganic nutrients. After composting, the household garbage becomes hygienic and odorless humus. Both solve the garbage outlet, but also to achieve the purpose of re-resourcing, but the domestic waste compost low nutrient content, high impurity content, long-term use of easy to cause soil compaction and groundwater quality deterioration, need to be in the compost pre-treatment or post-treatment unit to carry out strict sorting.

Integrated treatment technology research is imperative. The main obstacle to the resource utilization of garbage on the one hand is that the garbage itself is complex, difficult to resource utilization.

On the other hand, the research and development of related technology has not kept pace with the existing utilization technology often adopts a single mode (such as incineration power generation), the same method of treatment of different garbage components, resulting in a large amount of consumption of the treatment process itself, the economy is poor. Therefore, according to the local conditions, according to the different composition of the garbage, comprehensive treatment of key technology research, to fundamentally solve the garbage problem is of great significance, is related to the national economy and people's livelihood of a major event.
