In the past not long ago, Christmas Eve, "beautiful house" aired the last installment, the program team will be the previous "transformation" mode into "creation", in the vast prairie, for the local herdsmen to build a unique library. The first time I've seen this, I've seen a lot of it.

Daniel Wu's team of artists and designers had to work together to build this brand new house, and they used the sandy land as their drawing paper to paint their imaginations, and the results were stunning.

Not only did this library on the prairie blow your mind, but it was immediately nominated for a Royal Institute of British Architects award after the show aired.

With the popularity of the library, the 80-year-old designer responsible for the overall design of the library is also "fire".

This is not the first time he has appeared in the public eye, as early as in the "Warm New Home", the designer showed the extreme transformation of the small house has been amazing. He is good at combining science and technology with architecture, and has even been named the "black technology architect".

Missy was lucky enough to interview this brilliant young architect, and it turns out that in addition to this library, his other works are also eye-opening!

It's on fire, but it's not perfect

The Inner Mongolia Grassland Library is already a perfect work in the eyes of the audience, and Zhang Hai'ao agrees that it generally presents what everyone had envisioned before.

The library takes elements from the Mongolian steppe, and is presented in a modern way, process, and language. The modern steel structure is combined with the traditional natural stone and wood to anchor the building in such an environment, presenting the architectural form of the unity of the three ethnic groups of Manchuria, China, and Mongolia.

But in addition to his own satisfaction, Zhang Hai'ao has many regrets.

He thinks that the positioning of the building can be more clear, and the architectural form can be more simplified. The choice of materials for the fa?ade could have been more considered, and the construction of the wood could have included more traditional craftsmanship....... If he had more time, he could have presented this work more perfectly.

A very complete work in the eyes of others, Zhang Hai'ao can list it so some "imperfect" place, perhaps only such serious and not satisfied, can be the ultimate building.

20 square meters into 120 square meters, 1 space 6 kinds of life

Before the broadcast of "Beautiful House", Zhang Hai'ao was already a "Netflix" designer.

In a similar home remodeling program, "Warm New Home", Zhang Haiaao made several appearances and came up with eye-catching works. One of the most praiseworthy is a 20-square-foot snail house in Beijing's Second Ring Road that was transformed into a 120-square-foot design.

In this case, 800 TeleServices utilized the principle of three-dimensional garage, combining the use of elevated floor and folding furniture to complete the six modes of "divine transformation".

The cost of this new residential technology is only about 150,000 yuan, which is less than the money to buy a bathroom in Beijing can actually return 100 square meters of usable space. For the big city of ultra-small home is undoubtedly a new way to save space.

Zhang Hai'ao believes that this form as an effective means of solving the lack of housing space in large cities, the future is bound to be popularized at a faster rate, and he has also been doing some mass production work.

Customization and mechanization should be the future direction of residential development.

He also depicted a somewhat sci-fi future picture for Missy: the future of the housing household industrialization integration is very high, the household is unified pre-fabricated, like the current car, the form will be very uniform, more with soft furnishings to define the style, and intelligent management of the home with science and technology ...... the future of the way of living will be greatly The way of living in the future will be greatly changed.

Container into a work of art, living in the living art museum

In the case of Shanghai container transformation, Zhang Hai'ao will be four dilapidated containers transformed into a mechanical style "art", he is good at the unity of the building and the environment, so that the building is beautiful and not abrupt.

A whole set of variable furniture is used in the containers, forming a multi-functional "home + office + party" space. office + party" multifunctional system, like a "magic cube" to meet the needs of residents.

At the same time, the use of a mechanical style of cool metal facade, and some changes in the surrounding environment, a few small lights, a wooden corridor cleverly link the building and the surrounding space as a whole.

All these small but wonderful changes are made by Zhang Hai'ao, due to cost control and environmental considerations, he reused the leftover materials from the remodeling process and used local native reed poles to break the isolation of the building through some flexible changes.

Architecture is ultimately about understanding the spirit of what different places represent.

When the container is transformed into a collection of homes and offices, it has a strong sense of technology, random and natural; while the yurt library echoes the original grassland with its undulating terrain, so that the building will fade into the grassland from certain angles.

Bringing Suzhou Garden Home

Zhang Haiao is good at interpreting tradition with avant-garde, and integrating Chinese local culture into modern architecture.

When remodeling an old house in Yangpu District, Shanghai, he sublimated the inspiration from traditional Chinese gardens and proposed the idea of "vertical garden".

He turned the disadvantage of the narrow and high space of the old house into an advantage, and planned a small and complex space with the complexity of the space and path of the Jiangnan garden, separating it into a four-story building.

Zhang Hai'ao said that there are different directions in modern architecture, some architects use parametric design, some learn from the Japanese "light, thin and soft", and some carry out structural exploration and deconstruction of materials.

But what really brings us something different from the rest is our own culture.

His dedication to traditional Chinese culture can also be seen in his other design cases.

In addition to the case of this old house, he designed the 2014 APEC summit hotel - Beijing Sunrise Oriental Kempinski Hotel, from the Chinese traditional feeling of the rising sun, the pursuit of "unity of man and nature"; and the Mongolian steppe library, inspired by the Qianlong Emperor's reign. The inspiration for the library came from the Wanshou Pavilion that Qianlong gave to his mother.......

The latter was shortlisted for the RIBA award because of its exploration of traditional culture, and exploring one's own traditional culture in architecture is what a truly local architect should do.

"Meditation Space", a place for the soul

For Zhang Hai'ao, architecture is not only a place for the body, but also a place for the soul. Therefore, as long as the conditions allow, he will set up a small, independent "meditation space" for the people living in the design.

The meditation room outside the container house, the attic on the roof of the old house, and the stargazing platform in the grassland library are all examples.

Zhang Hai'ao said, "They **** the same characteristics are small, a person quietly look and feel inside, the pursuit of serenity in the hustle and bustle."

He believes that the meditation space represents the pursuit of spirituality, and that ultimately architecture should rise to the realm of theology or spirituality, and he wants these small attempts to be an ambush in a series of projects, hoping that they will become a kind of spiritual support.

Architects always build Dream Houses for others, but what is their own? Missy was very curious, and in a few words, Zhang Haiao constructed a simple picture for us:

A relatively simple and concise, very modern building, with a brick facade and wood-based, environmentally friendly and durable materials. I hope there is a huge yard, not empty, but like the traditional courtyard building with several deep ......

Missy looks forward to the day when Zhang Hai'ao's Dream House will be built, and then visit the courtyard that he has in mind.

Regarding the work afterward, Zhang Haiaao also has some expectations. He hopes to have the opportunity to try and work on cultural buildings - libraries, museums, etc. Such a wish is intertwined with the humanistic concern revealed in his architecture.

Advice to young designers

If you can love an industry for ten years as one day, it must have a unique charm. Missy asked for two tips for students who are studying architecture, not fast enough to remember the notes:

First, choose a place where you can grow quickly is the most important, do not go with the tide;

Second, take a relatively distinctive path, start from a small team, and become an indispensable part of the team .
