Advanced course of cross-country white (3) Modification of headlights and luggage racks
Welcome to the third phase of the course "Advanced Off-road White". This issue will focus on two topics: off-road vehicle headlights and luggage rack modification, hoping to bring you more knowledge. The importance of lighting in the process of cross-country crossing is self-evident. Good visual penetration will greatly improve driving safety under complex road conditions. The luggage rack also determines how much equipment you can bring, which expands the limitation of trunk space, and it is easier to find a "safe place" for some large items with unconventional sizes.

If you want to have fun off-road, two modifications are essential! Well, before it's too late, let's get down to business.

Modification of headlight group of off-road vehicle

The fundamental reason of headlight modification is that the brightness and range are not enough, especially the road conditions in off-road process are very complicated, which further magnifies the shortcomings of the original headlights. The main engine factory follows the principle of sufficiency and cost control in the design of headlights, and will not ignore the cost of single performance, which also reserves opportunities for the emergence of auxiliary lights. We rarely see the direct modification of headlights, and most of them improve the lighting intensity by installing auxiliary lights to achieve the purpose of headlight modification. The headlight modification we are talking about below is to install auxiliary lighting.

Headlights can be roughly divided into four types according to different light sources: halogen, xenon, LED and laser. The cost of the four light sources is also from low to high, and the lighting effect of halogen is also the worst. At present, most of the mass-produced models in the main engine factory use xenon or LED light sources, and halogen headlights are gradually marginalized.

The installation of auxiliary lights also involves the concept of color temperature, which can be simply explained as different colors of light at different temperatures. Yellow (warm color) will appear when the color temperature is too low, such as halogen headlights. If the color temperature is too high, it will appear blue. "Too high" or "too low" is not good, but it will destroy the lighting effect. The most comfortable color temperature range for human eyes is about 5500K-6500K, and the LED light source is within this range. It is best to refer to the color temperature close to the fluorescent lamp when installing the auxiliary lamp.

How to modify the auxiliary light? There are the following points to note.

1、? The illumination brightness of the auxiliary lamp cannot be improved indefinitely, that is to say, the power of the headlight should take into account the bearing capacity of the whole vehicle's electrical appliances, and it is not possible to increase the brightness without restraint by increasing the power, otherwise problems will easily occur. For example, the power of an original halogen headlight is about 60W. If you install four 100- 140W halogen headlights in the front of the car, you should consider whether to replace the wires, relays and other equipment.

2、? It is suggested that the color temperature of the auxiliary lamp should be as close as possible to the sunlight effect, that is, it should be in the range of 5000 K-6000 K While ensuring the lighting effect, it is not easy to get tired after driving for a long time.

3、? Installation position. Personally, I suggest that the auxiliary lights should be installed in a detachable state at any time. Tighten them when lighting is needed, and take them off at any time when it is not needed. The installation position can be the bumper under the air intake grille, it can also be installed around the roof rack, and it can also be installed with suction cups on the hood, which can be used together. However, the wiring of auxiliary lights may be very complicated, so an experienced refitting factory should be selected when refitting.

4、? We should also pay attention to legal compliance. For example, many off-road vehicle owners will fix the auxiliary lights in the gap between the air intake grille and the water tank, which is convenient for wiring and takes into account the aesthetic effect after hiding, but such modification is illegal. There are many subjective factors to judge whether the modification in different places is legal. Before refitting, it is very helpful for you to inquire about the legal restrictions of headlight refitting.

Modification of luggage rack of off-road vehicle

Why do you need to install a luggage rack? Cross-country enthusiasts who like to take road trip and cross long distances may know that in some remote areas of northwest, southwest and Inner Mongolia, due to the limited conditions along the way, it is very likely that they will not get the ideal support of materials and catering. In addition, under special road conditions such as desert, swamp and Gobi, it is necessary to bring 1-2 spare tire, spare fuel tank and several rescue tools. These "big equipment" need you to have a luggage rack to further enhance the loading capacity.

It is necessary to load a lot of unconventional items, which is one of the reasons why many cross-country enthusiasts will list the luggage rack as a necessary option when modifying it. As mentioned above, the installation port of spotlights is reserved on the luggage rack, which can also solve the lighting problem during long-distance crossing, killing two birds with one stone.

So, what problems should be paid attention to during the installation of luggage rack? Everything has two sides. Let's also discuss some bugs caused by installing luggage racks.

1, improve fuel consumption. When the weight of the vehicle is added to the luggage rack, the drag coefficient suddenly increases, which is unfriendly to fuel economy as a whole. The road conditions faced by off-road vehicles are complex, and the fuel consumption itself will not be too low. The luggage rack and the luggage on the luggage rack further increase the mass of the whole vehicle. For remote areas where refueling is inconvenient, it is still worthy of attention. You need to judge whether there is fuel in the fuel tank to support you to complete the crossing in real time.

2, affecting the power handling performance. From the point of view of vehicle design and aerodynamics, the prototype did not consider the installation of luggage rack. The luggage rack has a negative impact on the weight and wind resistance of the vehicle, and also improves the center of gravity of the vehicle. These factors will also affect the handling performance of vehicles.

3, the driving noise is improved, the luggage rack+luggage, so that the wind impact area of the roof is greatly improved, while the driving resistance is improved, the noise will be very obvious, and the mute performance of the off-road vehicle itself is not very good, and the overhead noise when driving at high speed is not acceptable to every owner.

4. The luggage rack poses a potential safety hazard. Some people may wonder, what is the relationship between luggage rack and safety? The luggage rack is a modified part, and it involves a problem of strength matching when it is fixed. Not every luggage rack can provide perfect installation strength, even welding. The constant bumps on the washboard road will not spare you. The luggage rack is fixed on the car body and the luggage rack is fixed on the luggage rack. Once the safety strength of the luggage rack is insufficient or the luggage is not firmly fixed, it is very likely that the whole luggage rack or luggage will slide down, which is very dangerous. If you don't often have to load a lot of luggage, it is not recommended to install a luggage rack.

The beauty of the luggage rack is also a factor that has to be considered when modifying. For example, an off-road vehicle (Isuzu mu-X, Toure Y62, Toyota Prado, Toyota Land Patrol, etc. ) plus a square luggage rack. Hard-core off-road vehicles (Mercedes-Benz G-Class, Jeep Shepherd, Toyota LC7 series, etc. It is also ugly to match the luggage rack in the shape of "Nianpao" commonly used in urban SUVs. Presumably, the owner doesn't want to attract passers-by because of ugliness.

Write at the end:

The modification of luggage rack and lighting seems simple, but it is full of "learning". Unscientific modification not only does not help the performance of the vehicle, but also has certain risks. Targeted modification of small events will actually bring qualitative changes to your performance improvement, but it is not so friendly and has many negative effects on the performance of the whole vehicle. Again, off-road modification is a double-edged sword. While improving the corresponding performance, there are also places that you need to adapt to, and even prepare for potential safety hazards, and make reasonable modifications according to your own needs, which is worth learning.

In the next issue, let's talk about the related topics of air intake system modification. If you are interested in SUV and off-road content, please pay attention to us, and we will continue to export high-quality content in this area.
